Gardening Tasks to do in March.

Can we finally now say that Spring is on the horizon, winter is fading and March is an exciting month for any gardener. Preparation for the coming months is key, now is the time to start the jobs you are able to do ready for a successful growing season. No garden is too big or small that you cannot start making plans for the Spring and Summer months coming!

At Okatsune these are our top tasks we recommend you do this month.

1.      Prepare your soil

Healthy soil is the basis for any successful garden.

·         Start by clearing away weeds, dead plants and debris.

·         Tur your soil to improve aeriation.

·         Add the compost and manure to enrich the soil with nutrients.

·         Test the soils pH and nutrient levels and apple fertiliser if needed.

One tip is not to work with soil that is still too wet as it can cause compaction, and we all know we’ve had lots and lots of rain this winter, which may hinder this process.

Top Okatsune Tool to use is a pair of Okatsune Snips to clear away any dead plants that are not too woody in nature.

2.      Prune Trees and Shrubs

The ideal time to prune is now. Pruning in early Spring means you are ready for when active growth begins, helping them bloom in the coming months.

Cut back ornamental grasses, prune roses, remove damaged branches from trees and shape summer flowering shrubs.

Have you seen our Japanese Gift Set? This is gardeners must have, featuring a pair of our most popular Secateurs our 103’s perfect for pruning anything up to 25mm in diameter and a Super Accel pruning saw which is just the job for removing small, damaged branches from trees. Plus, a handy case to carry them both in.

The Okatsune Sickle will also help you cut back any ornamental grasses that need a tidy before the summer months.

3.      Plant Cool Season Crops

Planting hardy vegetables that tolerate cooler temperatures means you have a head start for harvesting the crops.

You can directly sow carrots, spinach, peas and radishes at this time of year.

You can also transplant lettuce, broccoli and cabbage

Don’t forget we can still have a frost in March so make sure plants are covered if any are expected.

4.      Divide Perennials

Dividing overcrowded perennials improves plant health and gives you free new plants, helping you save some money.

Ideal plants to divide in the garden are hostas, sedum, ornamental grasses and daylilies.

Make sure to replant the divisions you’ve made promptly and water well to keep them healthy.

Plan and Design your Garden

The perfect time to sit in the sun with a hot drink and sketch out your garden.

Use any drawings to show where you might like to add plants, practice crop rotation. After all spring is seen as the season of change so why not start right there in your garden.

Get ahead and order any seeds and plants to make the changes and help get your garden blooming during the warmer months.

We hope this list helps you tackle the tasks that can be done now, ticking these off the list now means you are prepared for a thriving growing season.
