Gardening tasks for October

With Summer well and truly behind us, now is the time to look forward and get all the jobs in the garden tied up and ready for the Winter months.

Here are our top tasks we think you should be doing in your garden in October.

Prune and Cut back perennials

As they start to die back, it’s now time to cut them. This will help prevent rot and disease during the coming months ensuring they bloom beautifully from Spring onwards.

Your Okatsune Secateurs will be your perfect companion for this job; with razor sharp blades they will give a clean and precise cut on stems and branches. But remember only to cut anything up to 25mm in diameter with your Secateurs. For anything bigger than this we’d always recommend a Silky Folding Saw for pruning,

Tree and Shrub Pruning

Sap flow is reduced at this time of the year and with leaves falling it is the perfect time to shape trees and shrubs.

To carry this out effectively we’d recommend our Secateurs for shrub pruning, whilst using a Silky Folding Saw for those thicker and harder branches of shrubs and trees that are over 25mm in diameter. Using one of our folding saws will ensure a clean cut with their sharp teeth meaning you use minimal effort whilst cutting.

It’s time to Harvest delicious Autumn Produce

Apples, pears and squashes along with root crops are ready to collect and make something lovely with.

We’d recommend our Okatsune 301 snips, not only are the sharp blades perfect for cutting  stems, the blade is also angled upwards meaning when you cut there is no risk to you damaging the fruit and vegetables you are collecting.

Preparing Roses for Winter

Trim back your roses and dead head them just in time for Winter, this will help prevent wind rock as well as preventing disease, keeping them healthy during the Winter months, so they flourish in their next flowering season.

As always, a pair of our Okatsune Secateurs are perfect for pruning. Make sure to dead head using them and trim back roses to half their height. You can also remove diseased leaves and stems to create a healthier plant for next season.

Okatsune Tool Maintenance

Spend some time caring for your Okatsune Hand Tools.

Clean them to remove debris and sap, dry them well and sharpen your blades with one of our Okatsune Whetstones then apply a little oil to the blades to prevent rust. When completely dry store them in a well-ventilated area.
